Springfield Township High School

Graduation Project Proposal
Project

Briefly describe your intended project: I will hopefully spend my hours working at the Free Library of Springfield Township. My main goal in volunteering there would be to help the students who are having difficulty with homework. I have already seen students at the library quickly getting off task after school while in the library (much to the dismay of the librarians and other staff).

Project Outcome or Goal: I hope to initiate a program where high school aged students would tutor the children in the library for two hours after school. This would allow the children to stay on task and accomplish their homework. It would also be a short amount of time so that the tutors may also keep up with their own work. This program will hopefully ease the stress of the librarians and staff so that the library becomes a peaceful place after school.

Project Completion Strategies: I will first volunteer my time at the librar y to see what is needed there in terms of how many tutors and how much time each tutor will need to be available at the library. I will also hopefully be able to help out the librarians by keeping the children from misbehaving, as I have observed on many occasions.

Project Resources and Materials: As far as materials go, I will most likely need pencils and pens as well as loose leaf paper. Once I am able to observe the children further, I can assess further what resources they use from the library and hopefully provide those materials as well.

Research

Research Topic: I intend to research the effects of peer tutoring on children.

Essential Question: Can peer tutors aid children in their learning ventures? Will peer tutoring oppertunities effect the children at the library?

Prior Experience: I have taken a peer tutoring class at school, so I know many of the tools and tips to helping students. I also privately tutored a friend, from which I felt a great amount of pride when she received her first A in math the whole year.

Research Benefits: I think the program I will install at the library will mostly benifite from my research. I will be able to provide statistical reasoning as to why my program is important and worthwhile. I feel as though this would be a huge benifite to all students who reguraly attend the library and for those who feel as though they need just a little bit of help.
